Dialogue on the Edge
A conversation between good and evil
Setting:
A quiet rooftop at night. The city sleeps below them. Two men sit on the edge of a wall, feet dangling into
darkness. It’s a ritual they’ve shared since childhood—watching the lights fade, sharing silence with the
night.
Characters:
First Man – Restless, questioning, philosophical.
Second Man – Calm, composed, righteous—at least at first glance.
First Man:
Why are we here?
I mean… on this earth?
Second Man (gently):
To build it. To make it better.
First Man:
But what’s the point? Aren’t we all heading to another world anyway?
Second Man:
Yes. But this one is the test. We pass—we earn Paradise.
We fail—
First Man (interrupting):
—we burn in Hell.
Second Man:
Exactly.
Life is a battlefield between good and evil. It never truly rests… until God ends it.
First Man:
A battle, then.
Tell me—do you believe Satan is the embodiment of all evil?
Second Man:
Wasn’t he cast out of Heaven?
He’s the enemy of mankind.
First Man:
But he was cast out… because of us.
Second Man (hesitates):
You’re saying… man is to blame?
First Man:
I’m saying we keep blaming the devil,
but all he does is whisper.
The decision—that’s ours.
Second Man:
But he was created to tempt us!
First Man:
If we didn’t already have darkness inside us,
he wouldn’t stand a chance.
Second Man (growing agitated):
You sound as if you’re defending him.
So why do people sin?
First Man:
Because evil is easier.
Quicker.
And sometimes… it’s rewarded.
Second Man:
You’re scaring me, my friend.
What exactly are you getting at?
First Man:
What frightens me more is how the devils among men
commit evil with brilliance…
and walk away pure.
Sometimes, I think—
that alone makes me want to sin.
Second Man (sharply):
God forbid!
Why?
What are you trying to prove?
First Man:
Why not?
Aren’t all sins forgivable?
Second Man:
But God is also severe in punishment!
First Man:
And He is also Most Merciful.
Second Man:
What if your repentance isn’t accepted?
First Man:
Then I’ll cling to the verse:
“I am as My servant thinks of Me.”
(A heavy silence. They look at each other. Something unseen passes between them.)
Second Man (quietly):
I promise…
I will repent.
I will seek forgiveness.
First Man (confused):
Wait… what?
What are you talking ab—
(Before he can finish, the Second Man lunges forward—pushes him off the edge.)
[Sound: a distant, final thud.]
The First Man falls like a broken marionette.
The street below drinks his blood.
From the rooftop, the Second Man watches—
one hand resting on his cheek,
whistling, calm.
Second Man (coldly):
You were right.
The path of evil is faster…
to get what you want.
(He inhales slowly. Then smiles.)
Second Man:
Now… I can marry her.
